Michael's been gone for over a week...

The story starts out with Michael departing Davis on Saturday, May 24th (I think) and heading to SF. This was all to start out with a bang by leaving the city by way of the Golden Gate Bridge. According to Michael, he was going to swim in the Pacific before getting started.

I've left a voicemail and we will see how long it takes him to get back to me!

Problem Is said...

Hey Michael,
2 words of advice: Somaoa Cookhouse just north west of Eureka as you are passing through. Take the Somoa Bridge Hwy 255 from 101 toward the ocean. It is the old Georgia Pacific Cookhouse. All you can eat Michael style. Breakfast is best.
Then 41 miles north of Arcata is Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. You go through it to go to Fern Canyon by the Ocean. An amazing nature walk. I know it is a ways off course but it is worth it. If you do go that way cruise through Trinidad. Excellent fish and chowder place at the fishing pier and at least ride through Patrick's Point State Park about 3 miles north of Trinidad. Hwy 299 shall be hot and dusty this time of year. I hear reports from a friend that the usual heavy RV traffic is down because of gas prices on Hwy 199 going through Jedidiah Smith State Park to Crescent City. So it should be a safer than normal bike trip. Take care. Kris.

Fern Canyon:

"A couple beautiful “fern canyons” are found along the North Coast, but the Fern Canyon in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park is undoubtedly the most awe-inspiring. Five-finger, deer, lady, sword, and chain ferns smother the precipitous walls of the canyon. Bright yellow monkeyflowers abound, as well as fairy lanterns, those creamy white, or greenish, bell-shaped flowers that hang in clusters. Ferns are descendants of an ancient group of plants which were much more numerous 200 million years ago. Ferns have roots and stems similar to flowering plants, but are considered to be a primitive form of plant life because they reproduce by spores, not seeds."
